Band of the Week: Death Cab for Cutie

Okay! I am officially back. For the past few weeks I have been in a deep funk. I didn’t want to write anything or design anything. I am still in the funk but I am slowly climbing out and writing this is the first step.

As you have seen in the title this is the ‘Band of the Week’ post. I usually do this on Thursdays but I am going to try and start doing them on Mondays now. So for this week my choice is Death Cab for Cutie. Sad to say that I didn’t start listening to them until they came out with the theme for Twilight’s New Moon. The singer I recognized from the group Postal Service (which will more than likely be another group featured). As always here is an excerpt from Amazon.com about the group:

Death Cab for Cutie (DCfC) is a Grammy nominated American indie rock band, formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band consists of Benjamin Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, production), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums).

Death Cab for Cutie was originally formed by singer Ben Gibbard as a side project to his main involvement in Pinwheel. He took the name from a track by UK 60s group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, for his first release You Can Play These Songs with Chords. The cassette-released album was much more successful than Gibbard had anticipated, and he decided to form a band.

Having gathered together a drummer, a guitarist and a bass player, the new band hit the recording studio to re-record some of the tracks from You Can Play…. The result Something About Airplanes was well received, though the band had to wait until Transatlanticism (2003) for their first Top 100 Billboard position. They cracked the Top 10 with their follow-up Plans.

Death Cab has released 5 EPs and 6 studio albums. Their initial record label was Barsuk Records, and later signed to Atlantic Records in November 2004.

Some recent related side projects of Death Cab include the solo work of Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla, the collaboration of Jimmy Tamberello and Ben for the Postal Service and on a few Dntel tracks. On October 20th, 2009 Ben and Jay Farrar of Sun Volt will release their collaboration on “One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur.”

I hope you enjoy this group like I do. And also, if you have any group in mind that you would like to see featured shoot me an email [angeleyez1042@gmail.com] and please put in the subject “Band of the Week.”
